Levels of Measurement and Types of Variables
Training Seminar
Understand the nuances in determining the types of variables you’re working with and their levels of measurement.
You probably learned about the four levels of measurement in your very first statistics class. Knowing the type of variables you’re working with is crucial when deciding how to analyze the data.
Failing to correctly match the statistical method to a variable’s level of measurement leads either to nonsense or to misleading results.
But the simple framework of the four levels is too simplistic in most real-world data analysis situations.
I’m Karen Grace-Martin, your instructor.
Understanding types of variables and determining levels of measurement can get pretty tricky and depends on the specific context. You might need to treat a variable as ordinal in one study and nominal in another, based on a number of subtle issues.
The choice of an appropriate statistical analysis depends on how the variable was measured. Misclassifying a variable’s measurement level can lead to using an inappropriate method. Or to missing important results.
Join me to learn the nuance of considering variable type and determining the level of measurement based on the research question and other context clues.

In this live, online seminar, you’ll learn:
- Different ways of describing and thinking about level of measurement
- The statistical and other practical considerations in determining a variable’s level
- When and how we can decide to change a variable’s level
- And more!
Who Should Attend?
This seminar is for researchers like you.
Levels of Measurement is essential knowledge from planning your analysis to interpreting results. It’s a fundamental topic that is crucial to understand deeply. It’s beneficial from basic through to advanced statistics.
The seminar is crafted for researchers and analysts conducting statistical analyses for research studies, but it also applies to data scientists, program evaluators, business and policy analysts, and healthcare professionals.
Levels of Measurement is a Stage 1 topic and part of The Fundamentals of Statistical Skill. You’ll need this to build a strong foundation for advanced statistics. Everything you learn here applies to higher level modeling.
Even if you’re beyond the basics, you’ll find this helpful. It’s all more nuanced and complex as you work with more advanced statistics.
How Does It Work?
In this seminar, we’re digging deeply into one topic for just one session.
Seminar Details:
- Date: March 28th, 2024
- Time: 2 – 4 pm EST
- Location: Live via Zoom
- Instructor: Karen Grace-Martin
Have questions? No problem!
You’ll have direct support from the instructor via live Question and Answer built into the seminar.
Will It Be Recorded?
Yes! Within 48 hours after the live seminar, you will have access to the recording and all the related materials via The Analysis Factor Programs Center.
Often, our participants report they understand the material at a deeper level on a second or third pass. You’ll learn more every time, so take advantage of it!
